1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 pound pitted dates
1 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar

Mix first 7 ingredients to make dough.

To make filling mix dates, nuts, water and sugar in saucepan. Cook 10 minutes and let cool.

Divide dough into 3 parts. Roll each section out and spread with 1/3 of filling. Roll like jelly roll. Let stand overnight.

Slice and bake at 350.

1/2 lb Dessert Dates 4 1/2 oz.Almond Paste or Marzipan 1 tblspn Port,Rum or orange-flavoured brandy sifted icing (confect.) sugar about 20 roasted hazelnuts or almonds 3 1/2 - 4 oz. cooking chocolate, melted Slit dates lengthways and pit.
