Ethnic_misc - Israeli Revisionist Haroset

Israeli Revisionist Haroset

2 cups raisins
1 cup pecans, toasted
1 cup blanched almonds, toasted
1 cup date paste (or 1 cup dried dates, chopped)
3 Granny Smith apples, cored and cut into chunks
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 cup sweet red wine, or to taste
1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Using a food processor fitted with a steel blade, coarsely grind together the raisins and nuts, pulsing so as not to overprocess. Add the date paste or chopped dates, the apples and the cinnamon and mix well. Add wine and lemon juice to taste. Makes about 6 cups.

Recipe by Hemda Friedman.

4 pears (Comice or Conference) 300ml blackberry preserve (lingonberry if you can get it) 1 cinnamon stick 6 cloves 100ml red wine 250ml water Peel the pears and set aside. Put all the other ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Add the peeled pears and let them poach until soft - about 45 minutes. Leave to cool in the pan. Serve with cinnamon ice cream. Comment: Can be prepared the day before and it mellows overnight. Leave the stalks on the pears for best presentation. Ideally the pan should be the smallest possible to hold all the pears
