1 c dried figs
1/2 c shortening
2 eggs -- well beaten
3 t baking powder
3 T orange zest -- chopped
1/2 c coconut
1/2 t salt
3/4 c sugar
1/2 c honey
2 3/4 c flour
2 T milk
1 t lemon extract

Wash figs, cover with cold water. Simmer 10 minutes. Drain. Cut in pieces. Cream sugar & shortening. Add honey, eggs,
milk. Mix well. Sift flour, measure, sift with baking powder & salt. Add to sugar shortening mixture. Add fruit, coconut, & flavoring. Add orange rind. Mix thoroughly. Drop by teaspoonfuls on well-oiled baking sheet. Bake (435 F) 12-15 minutes.

1&1/2 cups shortening 3 cups brown sugar 2 eggs well beaten 2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. salt 4 tsp. baking powder 5 1/2 cups flour Preheat oven to 325° F.Mix together well in order given, then divide into five parts. Add variations to each part. Variations: 1. Chocolate- Add 2 squares melted chocolate, blend well and bake for 10 minutes 2. Spice- Add about 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, blend well bake for 9 minutes 3. Fruit- Add 1/2 cup diced dried candied fruit, blend well bake for 12 minutes 4. FEATHERWEIGHT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES 2 egg whites 2/3 cup superfine sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/16 teaspoon salt (a pinch) 6 ounces chocolate chips 1/2 cup chopped nuts Preheat oven to 350 °F. Beat whites until foamy, then add sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form. Mix in vanilla and salt.Fold in chips and nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls, 2 inches apart, on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Put in oven. Immediately turn off heat. Leave for at least 5 hours without opening oven door. (You can even leave them in overnight, if it's more convenient.)When done, cookies will be very light brown. Store in
