Cakesandfrostings - Cake Chocolate Cherry Cake

1/2 cup shortening -- butter, or margarine
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 squares unsweetened chocolate -- (1-ounce) melted
1 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/4 cup chopped Maraschino cherries
2 tablespoons Maraschino cherry syrup
1/2 cup chopped California walnuts



Preheat oven to 350° F. and grease the bottom of an 8 x 8-inch pan.

Stir shortening to soften. Gradually add sugar, creaming till light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well; stir in chocolate.

Sift together dry ingredients; add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, a little at a time, beating smooth after each addition. Add cherries, syrup, and nuts.

Grease bottom of an 8x8x2-inch square pan; pour in batter. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) about 40 minutes, or till done. Cool.

Frost with your favorite fudge frosting.
