Cakesandfrostings - Cake American Beauty Cake

1/2 cup butter, no substitutions
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 rounded tablespoons cocoa
2 ounces red food coloring
2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar

Frosting
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter, no substitutions
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla


Preheat oven to 350° F and grease and flour bottoms of two 9-inch pans or line with wax paper.

For cake cream butter with sugar until very light and fluffy; beat in eggs and vanilla.

In a small bowl, blend together cocoa with food coloring.

Add to creamed mixture and then add flour and salt.

Stir in buttermilk.

In another bowl, mix soda and vinegar.

Fold, do not beat, into batter.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.


Frosting:

Make white sauce by blending flour with milk until smooth and cook until thick, stirring constantly over medium-high heat.

Cool white sauce until very cool in refrigerator.

Cream butter and sugar with vanilla until very light and fluffy.

Combine white sauce and cream mixture with electric mixer until fluffy.

Frost cake.

Store cake in cool place or in refrigerator.
