Breakfastandbrunches - French Toast Mainstay With Spicy Apple Syrup

1/2 cup butter (1/4 pound)
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup
2 medium tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (2 cups)
1 (1-pound) loaf French bread, cut into 12 to 13 (1-inch) slices
5 eggs
1 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Spicy Apple Syrup:
1 (10-ounce) jar apple jelly
1 cup applesauce
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Dash of salt

Heat the butter, sugar, and corn syrup in a saucepan until the mixture is syrupy.

Pour into an ungreased 13-x-9-x-2-inch glass baking dish.

Cover with the apple, then the bread.

Whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla and pour the mixture over the bread.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and bake, uncovered for 40 minutes or until lightly browned.

Meanwhile, make the syrup:
Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the jelly is melted and the syrup is hot.

Separate the French toast slices with a knife and serve immediately, with the warm syrup.

Servings: 6 to 8 (apple syrup recipe yields about 1-1/2 cups).
