Bread - Sweet Bread Date Roll By Joy

1/2 c Crisco
1/2 c sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
2 1/4 c flour
1/8 t salt
1/2 t baking soda
1 package chopped dates
1/2 c water
1 c chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350.

Batter:
Cream together Crisco, sugar, brown sugar.

Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt and baking soda.

Blendtogether. If too soft, add a little flour to make a pliable dough.

Chill in refrigerator. Leave at room temperature before using.

Filling:
Simmer together dates, walnuts and water until thick and mushy.

Divide batter into thirds. Roll between 2 pieces of saran wrap into an 18" square and spread filling over.

Roll jellyrolly fashion. Seal ends.

2 C. Chopped Dates 2 C. Boiling Water 2 t. Baking Soda 2 C. Walnuts, whole or coarsely chopped 2 T. Butter 2 C. Sugar 2 Eggs 3 C. Flour Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour 3 one-pound coffee cans. Pour boiling water over dates; add soda and nuts while hot. Mix and let cool. Meanwhile, cream together butter, sugar and eggs. Add cooled date mixture and flour alternately to creamed mixture at low speed. Fill prepared cans half full. Bake for one hour.

DATE ORANGE NUT BREAD 1 cup dates 1/2 cup walnuts 2 cups flour 3 1/2 tea. baking powder 1 1/2 tea. salt 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 2 Tbls. soft shortening 1 tea. vanilla 1/2 tea. grated orange rind 1/2 cup orange juice 1 cup milk Preheat oven to 350.Pit and slice dates; chop walnuts. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in bowl. Add egg, shortening, vanilla, orange rind and juice and milk. Mix only to blend ingred. Stir in dates and nuts. Turn into greased and floured 9x5x3 loaf pan. Bake about 70 minutes or until loaf
