Bread - Sweet Bread Date Ornage Nut Bread

DATE ORANGE NUT BREAD

1 cup dates
1/2 cup walnuts
2 cups flour
3 1/2 tea. baking powder
1 1/2 tea. salt
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbls. soft shortening
1 tea. vanilla
1/2 tea. grated orange rind
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 350.

Pit and slice dates; chop walnuts.

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in bowl.

Add egg, shortening, vanilla, orange rind and juice and milk.

Mix only to blend ingred.

Stir in dates and nuts.

Turn into greased and floured 9x5x3 loaf pan. Bake about 70 minutes or until loaf tests done in center.

Turn out on rack to cool.

Add eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt and baking soda. Blendtogether. If too soft, add a little flour to make a pliable dough. Chill in refrigerator. Leave at room temperature before using. Filling: Simmer together dates, walnuts and water until thick and mushy. Divide batter into thirds. Roll between 2 pieces of saran wrap

1 cup boiling water 1 cup dates, chopped 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 tablespoons shortening 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 cups sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped walnuts In a mixing bowl, pour water over dates. Stir in baking soda and let stand 5 minutes. Cream together shortening and sugar, then egg, beating well. Stir in flour, salt and nuts. Stir in dates, combining alternately. Line a 10 inch loaf pan with waxed paper and pour in batter. Bake in a preheated oven 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes, or until firm.
