Bread - Sweet Bread Date Loaf

1-1/2 cup dates
1-1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon soft shortening
1 egg
2-1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup nuts

Pour boiling water over dates. Let cool.

Mix brown sugar, shortening and egg.

Add dates and remaining dry ingredients.

Put in greased loaf pan, let set 20 minutes

1 cup boiling water 1 cup dates, chopped 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 tablespoons shortening 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 cups sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped walnuts In a mixing bowl, pour water over dates. Stir in baking soda and let stand 5 minutes. Cream together shortening and sugar, then egg, beating well. Stir in flour, salt and nuts. Stir in dates, combining alternately. Line a 10 inch loaf pan with waxed paper and pour in batter. Bake in a preheated oven 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes, or until firm.

1 pkg. active dry yeast 1/4 c. warm water 2 c. flour 1 1/2 Tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. margarine or butter 1/2 c. milk 1 egg yolk Filling: 1/4 c. margarine 1/2 c. brown sugar 1 c. pecans or walnuts, chopped 1 egg white Add yeast to warm water and let stand 5 minutes. Mix flour, 1 1/2 tablespoon sugar, and salt. Cut in 1/2 cup margarine until mixture is like coarse meal. Scald milk, cool to lukewarm and then stir in egg yolk. Add to flour mixture. Add yeast mixture and mix thoroughly. Dough will be soft.
