Bread - Sweet Bread California Polka Dot

1 1/2 cups seedless raisins
1 1/2 cups water
1 slightly beaten egg
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons salad oil or melted shortening
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
2 1/2 cups sifted enriched flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon soda

Combine raisins and water; bring to boiling.

Cool to room temperature.

Mix next four ingredients.

Stir in raisin mixture.

Sift together dry ingredients; add beating well.

Pour into greased 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch loaf pan.

Bake in slow oven - 325 degrees - about 60 minutes or til done.

Remove from pan and cool.
