Appetizers - Onion Baked Onion Blossom W Dipping Sauce

1 large sweet onion (such as Vidalia or Texas Sweet)
1 teaspoon oil or cooking spray
1/4 cup bread crumbs or crushed cornflakes
Pinch red pepper
Pinch seasoned salt
1 egg white

Preheat oven to 350 °F.

Use cooking spray to grease a round casserole dish (2-cup capacity). Enable onion to stand up by trimming root with a sharp knife.

Remove 1/2 inch from the top of the onion, then remove peel. Cut triangular slices to the center of the onion, slicing from the top and stopping 1/2-inch from bottom.

Make several "petals" of this kind, working your way around the onion.

Place in baking dish. Drizzle with oil or mist with cooking spray. Cover and microwave until onion is slightly tender and petals begin to separate (1-1/2 to 2 minutes).

Meanwhile, combine bread crumbs, red pepper, and seasoned salt, then set aside.

After beating egg white until foamy, brush onto onion, making sure that it penetrates the petals, as well.

Sprinkle onion evenly with bread crumbs. Bake until lightly browned and crisp (about 10 to 12 minutes).

Serve hot with following dipping sauce:

Dipping Sauce:
1/2 clove garlic, finely minced
1 to 2 teaspoons horseradish
2 teaspoons mayonnaise, reduced calorie
1/2 cup sour cream, nonfat

Combine all ingredients, then refrigerate.
